POSITION DESCRIPTION
Program Scope and Complexity:
Strategic Programs serves as a gateway to academic and philanthropic partnerships, fostering collaborations between external industry, foundations and government customers, the program identifies areas of need and develops custom proposals to meet those needs through workshops, board meetings, and topic-specific events.

As a part of Strategic Programs and Business Development, the Corporate Affiliates Program (CAP) is a fee-based program dedicated to continuing to educate dedicated corporations about engineering and sciences at UCSB, to solicit their involvement in capstone activity, and to enhance UCSB's rankings.

The Director of Strategic Programs and Business development will oversee activities that advance interdisciplinary research, enhance donor support and coordinate College of Engineering industry outreach activities, including through the CAP program. By providing organizational leadership to the Program and fostering an environment which inspires collaborations across a broad spectrum of disciplines and researchers, the Director's role is essential to garnering strategic alliances and research collaborations, securing donor streams,
and providing industry contacts for students which can be leveraged into job opportunities

Responsibility:
The Director leads all functions that would involve strategic programs both from an internal and external perspective, by managing business development activities and opportunities that lead to expansion and growth of new opportunities with corporations. The Director acts as a liaison with Development and other campus groups involved in strategic initiatives, and manages outreach and engagement programs. The Director also meets with donors and prospects, ensures effective faculty presentations, identifies research proposals which meet the needs of the sponsors, performs due diligence during the process to ensure effective proposals which advance the complementary goals of the sponsors and the faculty and research groups. Develops and manages marketing campaigns that require expertise in content development, faculty coordination, and event management.
The Director is responsible for developing and overseeing the operating budget for the unit. Secures contracts, gifts and donor pledges from industry sponsors, monitors and allocates budgets for each project.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • PhD in Engineering or relevant physical science.

    Preferred qualifications
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills
  • 5 years or more of experience coordinating large-scale, multifaceted academia/research/industry efforts
  • Experience in management and coordination of symposiums, conferences, workshops
  • Expertise in building and nurturing cooperative partnerships with academic, industry, government, and philanthropic organizations.
  • Experience organizing and executing philanthropic efforts
