About the Position:
The College of Business and Economics is committed to leading business education through the guiding principles of program quality, balancing theory and practice, and expanding our outreach and visibility. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Business Advisor (Student Services Professional II-Range A). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Business Advising Center the Business Advisor provides academic advisement and support to undergraduate students in the College of Business and Economics. Advises prospective, newly admitted, and continuing undergraduate students on their major degree requirements, course selection, evaluation of transcripts and general university policies and procedures. Advises students on academic probation. Assists with the development of the College of Business and Economics' retention programs. Assists with and participates in special programs, student success initiatives, and workshops such as probation and new student orientations/seminars. Manages assigned population of students and coordinates activities and intervention strategies based on their needs. Works with existing programs to encourage cross campus collaboration of resources and finds innovative means to facilitate retention and graduation. Responsible for the coordination of the California Promise and Finish in Four program on behalf of CBE and the Academic Advising Center. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field, PLUS two years of professional experience in academic advising or a related field. Previous academic advising as a Graduate Assistant can be counted towards the two-year professional experience requirement. A masters degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis. Advise students individually and in groups on complex student matters related to their progression towards degree. Ability to demonstrate initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long range program improvements. Ability to interact professionally with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action to address those situations. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals within the College and around campus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree from an accredited college or university. Experience advising students in a higher education setting. Experience with data tracking, analyses and reporting. Experience with Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience working with a diverse student, faculty, staff, and community population.
