Primary Purpose of Position:
The Academic Advisor (School of Business Professional Advisor) position exists to educate the whole student through a developmental, student-focused approach. This includes individual, group, and electronic interactions that enhance academic success, promote personal, and professional development and foster a sense of belonging to the UNCP community.

Established in 1887 as a school for the education of American Indians, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke serves a distinctly diverse student body and encourages inclusion and appreciation of the values of all people. The Academic Advisor (School of Business Professional Advisor) will assist students in making informed decisions about a choice of major; advise students about the nature and content of the curricula and disciplines within the School of Business; help students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options; teach students how to navigate the systems, academic processes and policies at UNCP; interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements; evaluate and monitor student academic progress, course choice, and class schedule in context of student's life and career goals; help students to become contributing members of the UNCP community; and prepare students to take responsibility for making their own decisions about courses, academic programs, and long-term plans.

  • Answer general questions regarding course sequences, university procedures, and university policies.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all current and new undergraduate business students.
  • Track and monitor student progress towards academic goals using the EAB system.
  • Review current student progress and alert students of potential issues using the EAB system.
  • Update degree checklists each semester
  • Collect and monitor student data, including retention data.
  • Coordinate International efforts for the School of Business.
  • Provide referrals to other campus resources as needed.

  • Provide guidance to International students within the School of Business.
  • Manage the School of Business Learning Community.
  • Teach sections of UNV 1000 or UNV 1100 as assigned.
  • Participate in Student Orientation sessions.
  • Process all documentation related to advising such as change of major forms and graduation applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    PLEASE NOTE: This position is a time-limited appointment through June 30, 2023 and will terminate unless additional funds are identified to fund the position.

    Management Preference:
    Masters Degree with at least two years experience or Bachelors Degree with at least six years of experience working with college students in a community college or university setting. Ability to travel and work some evening and weekend hours required.
